He took her to California, where he enrolled her in an all-girls Catholic school and told the administrators that he was in the CIA and needed to keep his and Jan’s information completely private. In August 1976, Robert kidnapped Jan Broberg for the second time. During these 10 days, Robert convinced a few fellow criminals to burn down the Broberg’s store for money–and they did. Evidence of their affair was used to lessen the kidnapping charges against him, ultimately shortening his sentence to just 10 days served in jail. In time, he began an affair with Jan’s mother, Mary Ann Broberg. Whenever the two were together, Robert would rape her. He continued to send her letters, and Jan still believed she was still on a mission to save her family. In the aftermath of the kidnapping, Jan said she had been brainwashed by Robert. Upon returning to the U.S., Robert was arrested and charged with kidnapping. He then raped her, and shortly after, her parents flew to Mexico to find her. He told Jan that the only way to save her family was for a Broberg daughter to have a child with him by the age of 16, and if it were not her, it would be one of her sisters. Reflecting back on this time of her life, Jan remembers being brainwashed by Robert, who told her that the two were on a mission to save the Broberg family from aliens. While in Mexico, Robert Berchtold and a 12-year-old Jan Broberg were married. He told the Brobergs he was taking Jan horseback riding but instead drove her to Mexico. In the 1970s, Robert abducted Jan two separate times–once when she was 12 and again when she was 14, all in front of her parents’ eyes. The key subjects here are Jan Broberg and pedophile Robert “B” Berchtold. When the woman decided to end her relationship with Otto, however, he became enraged, killed both her and her husband, and made it look like a murder-suicide.Peacock’s new true crime drama, A Friend of the Family, hit the streamer this week with its first four episodes. The film’s ending explains that Otto was the lover of the woman who formerly inhabited the house, and that she designed the secret passages so that they could be together without her husband knowing. After Robert is arrested in the film, Kevin and Natalie assume they’ll finally be safe, only to discover that many of the horrors they’d seen were completely disconnected from Robert. The villain behind the couple’s torment is also very different in Aftermath, as the attacks are attributed to the debt-ridden husband of the house’s former owner, rather than by a disgruntled competitor.Īdditionally, Aftermath splices the events of the Rowe story with an entirely separate plotline concerning the origins of the house and the murder-suicide that took place there. For instance, Natalie and Kevin, their relationship, and the circumstances under which they purchase the house in Aftermath are entirely different from anything resembling Rice and Ruhter’s lives, other than the fact that both are young married couples. However, the horror movie is still largely its own entity, with many alterations and whole plotlines that have nothing to do with the real events surrounding Rowe. Aftermath pulls a number of details directly from the story of Rice and Ruhter, including the magazine subscriptions and the fake online ads.
